THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
The Power Of A Personal Brand Story
There’s one creator on TikTok who I am - look, I’ll be honest - overly invested in.
She’s the only creator who I actively go to the search bar and seek out daily updates from.
I feel like we’re friends.
When she has a good day, I’m so excited for her!
When she’s upset, I really feel for her.
I’ve never met her.
So how has she left such a lasting impression on me?
One of the biggest reasons is that she often shares her personal brand story.
It goes like this:
She grew up in a small town in NZ. When she was a teenager, she had a really bad eating disorder. It was so serious that she experienced heart failure and had to be hospitalised.
After re-learning to walk, she decided to move to Australia. That’s when her life - and her healing journey - began. She was exposed to new people, new ideas, and a new way of being.
And now she is healthy, works a job she loves, makes tonnes of money, supports her family, and travels the world.
It’s because of her story that I feel invested in:
who she is
what she stands for
what she’s been through
and how the life she’s living now is a result of her experience.
Stories, the ultimate connector
The human brain is a fiend for stories. They help us:
make sense of the world
build our identity
forge emotional bonds with others
Many of the world’s biggest public figures know this, and use their personal brand story to leave a lasting impression on you.
These stories always follow the same structure:
CANON EVENT - A pivotal moment or phase that changed the course of your life. It’s usually a moment of lowness, realising something has to change.
MONTAGE - A supercut of how you set about to change from the circumstance. You got harder, faster, better, stronger. Your version of training in the mountains with the monks
AND NOW - The aftermath of your montage, the life you’re living now as a result of having been through it.
(have a look at the way I told you the story of my fav creator)
Example: Steve Jobs’ personal brand story
CANNON EVENT - was fired from his own company after a power struggle with the board.
MONTAGE - Instead of giving up, Jobs founded NeXT and invested in Pixar, where he discovered his love for creative storytelling. He refined his vision for how technology could blend with design and creativity.
AND NOW - Apple brought Jobs back as CEO. He transformed the company with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad - and now it is one of the biggest and most innovative companies in the world.
What’s your personal brand story?
We all have one.
And sharing it not only helps us connect more with our audience, but with ourselves.
So have a go at using the CANNON EVENT, MONTAGE, AND NOW structure.
I have 2 spots available this month for 2 creators/ public figures who are ready to fully step into their stand-out brand.
If you’re serious about gaining more traction, clarity, and oomph with audiences, now’s the time.
