MrBeast's Cringe Mountain & Handling Haters
Is this what's stopping you from starting?
Hey Climbers. This Week — MrBeast’s Cringe Mountain, overcoming your fear of being seen online, handling haters and some creative inspo from one of the best in the content game.
MrBeast’s Cringe Mountain
With around 35 billion views on his content, MrBeast is the most famous Youtuber in the world. You might think he was just born great at what he does.
Nope.
Watch his first ever Youtube upload in 2012 (skip to 0.30).
Wild, right? Here’s what he had to say about how you improve:
“If you have sub 1,000 subscribers, there’s a good probability your videos just suck. They just do. And you need to make hundreds of videos, improve something every time, and just… get to the point where they don’t”
Climber tip of the week
Your fear of being seen online is stopping you from starting.
When we have a fear of being seen online, what we’re really scared of is being judged and rejected for who we are by people we know.
In our minds we’ll make a video, then our ex-best friend from high school will see it, laugh at it, and send it to the group chat.
Word will eventually spread about how cringe we are and then everyone we know will disown us. Or at least that’s how it feels.
When I was working in radio, I got dozens of haters per day. Sometimes hundreds. Strangers talked on Reddit about how cringey I was.
And guess what? Nobody disowned me.
But still, it was tough for a while.
However over time I managed to develop strategies to help myself handle it. And these days? It barely bothers me.
So I hope what I’m about to tell you can help you, too.
First we’ll look at a practical tip and then I’ll give you some mindset tips.
Practical
The most powerful way to face your Fear Of Being Seen is to trick yourself into just starting. So here’s what you’re going to do.
Start a new TikTok account.
On your new profile, click the three horizontal lines in the top right corner and then > settings and privacy > privacy.
You’ll see ‘suggest your account to others’ and ‘sync contacts and facebook friends’. Go into both and toggle all options off. This means that nobody you know will get served your account unless you send it to them or tell them about it.
You now have a secret, safe place to play and experiment without the eyes of anyone you know.
The point here is not to hide forever, but to use this new account to post to strangers until you feel confident in your ability to make content (which will be way quicker than you think). Now start!
Mindset
When you get a hater, think of Cringe Mountain. Haters are always hating from the base, yelling up at you as you climb. They haven’t even started their own climb! They’re not brave enough! So what credibility could they possibly have to laugh at you?
No stranger online is qualified to make a true judgment call about you. They don't know you. They saw one video (which is maybe, what - 0.00002% of your personality?).
Your real friends and family - those who know and love you - would never agree with anything a hater would say. They know the whole you. Nothing can change their high opinion of you! Trust their love for you.
Your reputation is fluid. If someone has something bad to say about you in one moment, on one day, it won't stay that way for long. That's the magic in continuing to climb Cringe Mountain - it's never over unless you decide to stop climbing.
All that said though, online hate can be a really serious thing. If you’re struggling, be kind to yourself. Log off, talk to someone, take a break. Don’t try to push through it if you’re not ok.
Creative inspo of the week
I’m looping back to MrBeast for this one.
The advice he shares in this video applies to everyone online, not just Youtubers.
Okay, climbers. Til net time,
